While reading the PMBOK, we noticed a tiny but notable item in Chapter 6. It’s notable because when you sit for the PMP exam, there are a lot of “which answer is more correct?” questions being asked. On pages 139 and 140, the three types of dependencies are defined. If you didn’t know, they are mandatory, discretionary, and external.
Here is the notable part. The PMBOK stated the project team determines which dependencies are mandatory and discretionary. But, it states the project management team determines which dependencies are external.
The project team and the project management team are not the same thing. The three paragraphs describing each of the dependencies are written so similarly, it could be overlooked.
The project management team is defined on page 444 of the PMBOK.
Project Management Team. The members of the project team who are directly involved in project management activities. On some small projects, the project management team may include virtually all of the project team members.
If you look for the definition of Team, Team Members, or Project Team Members in the Glossary, you’re going to be disappointed. Team does not appear. Team Members states “See project team members.” Unlike what Team Members states, there is no definition for Project Team Members.
